MITOCHONDRIAL GENOMES
Organization
Gene content is highly conserved in the mitochondrial genome of animals, but rearrangements, especially in the position of tRNA genes, do occur. The COI gene is ordinarily flanked on its 5' terminus by tRNATyr and at its 3' terminus by tRNALeu.

The order of protein coding genes is also highly conserved. MtGenome data on over 250 metazoan species suggests relatively few major gene re-arrangements (data is available from the Organellar Genome Retrieval [OGRe] project). In most animals, the COI gene is positioned between two other protein coding genes - ND2 on its 5' flank and COII on its 3' flank.
