PRIMERS
Overview
In order to obtain barcode sequences from such a broad spectrum of animal taxa, researchers require an arsenal of primer sets. Some primers will amplify COI across a wide range of organisms, while others may be designed to target specific taxonomic groups. A brief summary of the primers used to barcode animal life is given below:

Folmer Primer Set
The pri
mer set LCO1490 and HCO2198 amplify a 658 bp fragment of the COI gene in a wide range of invertebrate taxa (Folmer et al. 1994).

LCO1490: 5'-GGTCAACAAATCATAAAGATATTGG-3'
HCO2198: 5'-TAAACTTCAGGGTGACCAAAAAATCA-3'
