LIMITATIONS Hybridization/Introgression
It is impossible for any mitochondrially-based
system to fully resolve the complexity of life. For example,
where species boundaries have been blurred by hybridization
or introgression, supplemental analyses of one or more nuclear
genes will be required. Similarly, when species have recently
arisen through polyploidization, the analysis of genome size
may be needed. Protocols are available to deal with such complications,
but they will need to be implemented rarely because past work
has shown that hybrids, polyploids and mitochondrial introgressants
comprise less than 1% of individuals in most animal groups.
