LIMITATIONS
Young Species Assuming
a rate of sequence divergence of 2% per million years, the analysis
of a 600 bp fragment of COI will lead, on average, to 12 diagnostic
substitutions between species that diverged one million years
ago. The diagnosis of species becomes more difficult as the
time of their reproductive isolation shrinks. However, the fossil
record indicates that most species are substantially more than
a million years old. As a result, their diagnosis should be
simple.
